Can you see a dermatologist without a referral?
Often, yes. Your insurance plan decides, not the clinic. PPO plans and Medicare usually let you book directly. HMO-type plans often require a referral from your primary care doctor first. Check your plan or call the member number on your card before booking.
Wichita clinics put the job on you. Wichita Dermatology & Aesthetics tells patients to request a referral from their primary care doctor if their insurance requires one. The Dermatology Clinic, P.A., says it's the patient's responsibility to get a referral if their plan requires it.
What the plans say, checked October 13, 2026: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas PPO plans, Original Medicare, Blue Cross Kansas Medicare Advantage (PPO), Humana's Wichita Medicare Advantage plans, TRICARE Select, and the UnitedHealthcare and Aetna Better Health KanCare plans don't require a primary care referral. Sunflower Health Plan (KanCare), TRICARE Prime and most Aetna, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare HMO plans do. See the full table.
